Melbourne University Lightning was established in 2008
The Club
The club is partnered with The University of Melbourne and managed by a volunteer group comprising individuals with sport business acumen and extensive community networks. The Committee of Management is currently led by President, Rod Warnecke.
The club’s home base is the University’s Parkville campus. This includes access to indoor and outdoor facilities, athletics track, aquatic and fitness centre, gym, meeting rooms, support from university professional staff and inclusion in the University’s internationally recognised Elite Athlete Program.

Our Goals
- Team performance success at all levels of competition within the Victorian Netball League.
- Caring for the welfare of athletes and coaches.
- To create a product that attracts and provides successful sponsorship and other commercial opportunities.
- Delivery of an elite pathway for developing athlete through the delivery of a High Performance daily training environment.
- Community goodwill and connecting with our community through the implementation of mutually beneficial programs.
- Developing and implement a professional management structure that encompasses best practice team management and administration.
- Athlete and coach selection in Victorian State Teams, Super Netball Reserves and Super Netball clubs.
- To ensure that the club’s objectives comply with the direction set by Netball Victoria and comply with VNL Licence Agreement.
- Provision of first-class training facilities in partnership with The University of Melbourne.
- Self-sufficient and financial independence through increased sponsorship and fundraising opportunities.
- Sports management acumen and the ability to grow in all areas of club management.
